Another great way to make a canvas really stand out is to add depth. Depth makes the face and makeup really come to life, it also allows the viewer to have a more realistic idea of how it would look in real life. The best time to add the shadows and highlights is after all the other makeup is applied. Some may feel more comfortable adding the shadows first which is perfectly fine too.

The easiest way to create depth on any canvas is to take a large dark colored brush and lightly tap around the edges of the face. This effect is done best with the brush set at a very low opacity so that the makeup gives a hint of shadow which will round out the face and give the canvas depth. Another great place to add shadows is under the brow bones and along side the nose.

For those who want to take it a step further you can use a lighter color and add soft and subtle highlights to the brow and cheek bones and even the chin.
